Location: Northern Uganda between latitudes 2°North 3°North and longitudes 32°East and 34°East, 250 km from Kampala with an area of about 2,847km2.

Demography: Population – 368,626, comprising of 51% and 94.3% rural.

Ethnicity: Lugbara and Alur tribes.

Accessibility: A total road network of 1,541.2km, 250 trunk road, 316 km feeder roads, 973km of community roads. A ferry service that operates between Kungu and Masindi port daily as a road link to Apac. Other vessels and boats operate across Lake Kwania and Kyoga and the River Nile.

Topography: It’s characterized by low plains and rolling hills along the river at an altitude of 900m above sea level rising to a series of hills and peaks in the eastern and north eastern parts.

Vegetation: Predominantly dry savannah vegetation comprising mainly Terminalia acacia. There are several forest reserves and isolated riverine forest type vegetation is found along river Nile dominated by wetland plants.

Drainage: Total area under wetlands and swamps is 1,147.47km2 both permanent and seasonal. These are mainly papyrus swamps which have been found to have high biological diversity. Lake Kwania and Kyoga and rivers including Arocha, Okole and the river Nile.

Climate: The wet season extends from April to November with highest peaks in April and August of up to 1,330mm and temperature ranges between 17- 290C.

Financial services: commercial banks and registered SACCO’s and microfinance institutions.


Economic activities:

  • Agriculture: Over 80% earn their livelihood from agriculture; arable land covers 1,800km2 and major crops include: coffee, bananas, sun flower, millet, sorghum, rice, beans, peas, groundnuts, sesame, cassava, potatoes, cotton, cabbage and maize. Horticulture crops like mangoes, pineapples, passion fruits, oranges and avocadoes Livestock; mainly cattle, goats, piggery, turkeys, rabbits and poultry. Apiary; this a growing activity in the district.
  • Fishing: It’s composed of two components capture and aquaculture fisheries with over 48 landing sites stretching from Nambieso, Chawente, Akokoro and Ibuje. Fishing villages along Lake Kwania, Victoria Nile and fish ponds. Species include Tilapia, Nile perch, silver fish, Claris and Mirrocapp.
  • Mining: The district has mineral deposits of White diatomite, clay and rocks sand and oil & gas.
  • Tourism: Beautiful sceneries at the landing sites of Kayeyi, Akokoro, Kiga, Wansolo and Nambieso, Maruzi peninsula densely populated with wildlife since its adjacent to Murchison falls National park, Olum’s foot print (Tyen Olum one of the earliest inhabitants of this place) on Ibuje hills, Kungu jubilee site, burial grounds of the former president of Uganda Dr. Apollo Milton Obote in Akokoro.

Investment opportunities: Agro processing and value addition, Irrigation and mechanization, forestry and tree planting, honey production and processing, fish farming and processing and poultry farming and product processing, schools and vocational training institutions, health facilities, Mineral and oil exploration and extraction; preliminary exploration indicates high potential for oil and minerals along the shores of River Nile.
